Tree top view of the boulders at the Brickyard

Along with the Lizard's Mouth, the Brickyard is one of the premiere bouldering locations in Santa Barbara. Both of these climbing spots are right off the 154 on West Camino Cielo road and both can easily be visited in a day's trip. The Brickyard is about 0.4 miles before Lizard's Mouth and has enough boulders to keep a climber busy for days. The rocks here are characterized by large red sandstone blocks, which is why it got the name. However, the majority of the boulders at the Brickyard average a good 12-15 feet high and have a major lack of summit holds, thus making it really hard to top out. I highly advise bringing a nice crashpad or two or hanging a short piece of rope or daisy chain from the summit bolts and to clip in when close at the top. This practice is what some climbers call the "Brickyard Technique" and helps safely pulling off those tricky summit moves.
